With legislation placing an ever-increasing burden on organisations to ensure the health and safety competency of contractors providing services on their premises, it is vital to have a reliable system in place. More than ever, there is a need to determine how seriously an organisation’s external contractors and service providers take health and safety and to professionally assess the suitability of their arrangements. The Safecontractor scheme provides organisations with the reassurance that their contractor takes health and safety seriously.

The main aim of the Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment Association is to help improve standards of health and safety and the environment at work. This includes:
- keeping up-to-date with developments in health and safety legislation and working practices.
- providing opportunities for discussions with the health and safety executive and other enforcement agencies.
- enabling members to make a network of personal contacts.
- encouraging the exchange of ideas on health and safety issues between large firms and small firms.
- providing and maintaining a manned health, safety and environment information centre open to members and others.
- providing material and support for health and safety training activities.
- working with national agencies to represent the interests of our members.
- supporting other local health, safety and environment related organisations with their initiatives.
